Methods to Enhance the Hardness and Wear Resistance of Steel Grit Beyond Heat Treatment

1.Composite Materials: 

By combining materials with different properties, such as bimetallic composites, the high toughness of the soft base material and the high hardness of the wear-resistant layer material can be integrated, thereby enhancing wear resistance and service life. For instance, crusher composite hammer heads adopt a structure combining a steel casting base with a high chromium cast iron wear-resistant layer.



2.Structural Modification:

Altering the design of wear-prone components, like bimetallic composite grinding rollers or "three-in-one" combined hammer heads, can improve wear resistance and service life while maintaining high hardness.


3.Surface Hardening Treatments:

These include surface treatment techniques such as carburizing, nitriding, or carbonitriding. These methods can form a hardened layer on the surface of steel grit, enhancing its wear resistance. For example, carburizing increases the carbon content on the steel surface, achieving a surface hardness of HRc56-62 after quenching.


4.Induction Hardening: 

This is a selective hardening method where high temperatures are generated through electromagnetic induction, followed by rapid cooling to achieve localized hardening, suitable for applications requiring enhanced wear resistance.



5.Flame Hardening: 

Using high-temperature flames to heat the surface of steel grit to high temperatures, followed by rapid cooling, is applicable for surface hardening treatments of large and complex parts.


6.Cryogenic Treatment:

An additional heat treatment performed after quenching and tempering, which can release residual stresses in steel components, enhancing wear resistance, thermal fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance.


7.Salt Bath Hardening: 

Immersing steel components in a molten salt bath heated to high temperatures allows nitrogen to diffuse into the steel surface, forming a nitrided layer that enhances surface hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.
